Chief Conductor Ryan Bancroft

The award-winning American conductor Ryan Bancroft is Chief Conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
Ryan Bancroft grew up in Los Angeles and first came to international attention in April 2018 when he won both First Prize and Audience Prize at the prestigious Malko Competition for Young Conductors in Copenhagen.
Since 2023, Ryan Bancroft has held the position of Chief Conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, a choice met with acclaim across the music sphere. After his first season with the orchestra, it was evident that all expectations have not only been met but surpassed.
With the 2025/26 season, Ryan Bancroft begins his third year as Chief Conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. His strong commitment to Swedish music continues, as he conducts world premières of works by Tebogo Monnakgotla and leads a performance of a modern Swedish classic – Allan Pettersson’s Seventh Symphony. During his second season with the orchestra, he conducted Wilhelm Stenhammar’s Serenade and two Swedish world premières. His first season featured the world première of a symphony by Daniel Börtz and the European première of Anders Hillborg’s The MAX Concerto, with pianist Emanuel Ax – as well as a widely acclaimed performance of Sven-David Sandström’s masterwork The High Mass.
In spring 2025, Ryan Bancroft and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra also embarked on their very first European tour together, joined by, among others, soprano Nina Stemme. The tour was a resounding success, with performances in Gothenburg, Munich, Cologne, Hamburg, Dortmund, Luxembourg and Vienna.
Bancroft has in recent years debuted with numerous leading European and American orchestras, including the Philharmonia, Los Angeles Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Rai Orchestra in Turin, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and San Francisco Symphony. He has also conducted all major Swedish orchestras, including the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Malmö Symphony Orchestra, and Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
He has a passion for contemporary music and has performed with Amsterdam’s acclaimed Nieuw Ensemble, the French Ensemble Intercontemporain, assisted Pierre Boulez in a performance of his Sur Incises in Los Angeles, premiered works by Sofia Gubaidulina, John Cage, James Tenney, Anne LeBaron, and he has worked closely with improvisers such as Wadada Leo Smith and Charlie Haden.
Ryan Bancroft studied trumpet at the California Institute of the Arts, alongside additional studies in harp, flute, cello, and Ghanaian music and dance. He then went on to receive an MMus in orchestral conducting from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. While studying in Scotland he played trumpet with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra on many occasions.
He continued his conducting studies in the Netherlands and is a graduate of the prestigious Nationale Master Orkestdirectie run jointly by the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague. As a student, his main mentors were Edward Carroll, Kenneth Montgomery, Ed Spanjaard and Jac van Steen.
A number of filmed concerts with Ryan Bancroft and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra are available on Konserthuset Play.

Khachaturian unquestionably wrote music that captivates listeners.
Unfortunately, his other works have rarely been performed at Konserthuset. Here, it is Jean-Yves Thibaudet who takes on the vibrant and powerful piano concerto, with a beautifully flowing and dreamlike middle movement where the strings are accompanied by a flexatone (imagine playing on a saw!). The distinguished French pianist Thibaudet has been a champion of Khachaturian's music for many years.
Chief Conductor Ryan Bancroft then leads the orchestra in the classic Also sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strauss. This tone poem, with its powerful – not to mention iconic – opening, is inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophical novel. It is well known, of course, that Strauss's music was used in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, but Stanley Kubrick actually also placed music from Khachaturian's ballet Gayane in the same film.
The concert opens with the world premiere of a newly written work by the young Swedish composer Zacharias Wolfe (born 1996). Here begins a new collaboration with the Royal College of Music in Stockholm: each season a newly written work by a master's student will be performed. Wolfe's orchestral work Held by Threads is the first.

Chief Conductor Ryan Bancroft is thrilled to finally take on Mahler’s youthful masterpiece. “It’s a rare and remarkable piece that should be a real draw for Mahler lovers out there,” says Bancroft.
Mahler began composing the work while still a student at the Vienna Conservatory. The composition took just over a year, and he was 20 when he completed it. However, it would be several decades before the music was performed, and Mahler made several revisions along the way. The text of Das klagende Lied is based on a folk tale collected by the Brothers Grimm.
The soloists are Swedish soprano Miah Persson, Irish mezzo-soprano Paula Murrihy, Welsh tenor Elgan Llŷr Thomas and Swedish baritone Arvid Fagerfjäll, together with the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
The concert opens with the world premiere of a new work by this season’s composer, Tebogo Monnakgotla, followed by the imaginative Fairy Tale Poem by Sofia Gubaidulina (1931–2025). “Gubaidulina’s music has become something of an obsession for me. Fairy Tale Poem is a truly beautiful piece,” says Ryan Bancroft, who now begins his third season as Chief Conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
