Johan Fransén

Co-Principal and member of the orchestra since 1997.

Clarinetist Johan Fransén studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm with former philharmonic member Sölve Kingstedt. Johan Fransén has been alternate section leader of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra since 1997. He previously held the same position with the Malmö Opera, and he has also been solo clarinetist in the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra.

He has performed as a soloist with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra on several occasions, for example in 2002 in Aaron Copland’s Clarinet Concerto; in 2006 in Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto; and in 2016 in Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante (for oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn and orchestra). He was named Philharmonic Member of the Year in 2013. In addition to his orchestral engagements, Fransén dedicates much of his time to chamber music. He also teaches at the Royal College of Music and at the Åland Music Institute.
