Weekend Pick

During the unusual spring of 2020, programme director Fredrik Andersson browsed our video archive and created ten digital concerts as a tip for the weekend. Timeless music has no best before date — all the Weekend Picks are still here for you!

Every Friday during the spring of 2020, Konserthuset’s programme director Fredrik Andersson created a concert for the web, based thematically on repertoires from Konserthuset Play. In the digital world, chamber music can be paired with large orchestral pieces, opening up possibilities for exciting programming.

The Weekend Pick was a new way to shine a light on the unique musical treasures available in the video archive on Konserthuset Play. Learn about how Fredrik assembled the weekly concerts, and how the various pieces are connected.

”This spring’s last weekend pick is Clara Schumann’s youthful and virtuosic piano concerto. And also the music that once lured me into the wonderful world of classical music, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 4.”

”Three works from the turn of the 20th century. Elgar’s inspired portrait of the city of London, Strauss’ sensual depiction of dying, and Nielsen’s vibrant account of the four human temperaments.”

”Two different generations of brilliant Finnish conductors – our own wonderful chief conductor Sakari Oramo and Santtu-Matias Rouvali from the Gothenburg Symphony – in two life affirmative symphonies.”

”Bruckner’s eighth symphony is one of his most majestic pieces, and the last symphony he completed. As a lighter opener, we listen to CPE Bach’s short Sinfonia in e minor.”

”Sibelius’ Symphony No. 7 and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6. Both led by chief conductor Sakari Oramo. The final symphonies by two great masters.”

”Few composers have depicted dictatorship and tyranny as brutally and touchingly as Shostakovich, here in his tenth symphony. Alas, the music remains valid in our own time… We also hear Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s emotional Cello Concerto.”
