Stenhammar 150 years

Celebrate Wilhelm Stenhammar with us – the great Swedish composer’s 150-year anniversary is a good reason for a two-week festival.

Wilhelm Stenhammar is without hesitation one of Sweden’s most significant composers and was one of the foremost Swedish pianists of his time. We are celebrating the 150-year anniversary of Stenhammar’s birth with a large festival. Stenhammar was born in 1871 in Stockholm. His family lived on Kammakargatan, just a few hundred metres from the location at which Konserthuset Stockholm would later be built.

The festival takes place from 22 September to 3 October. Featured are both  piano concertos, both symphonies and further orchestra pieces – among them Excelsior! and the Serenade and Two Sentimental Romances. One concert features all of his six string quartets in one day (with three different string quartets) and theres is one lied concert with his songs and a piano recital with his most famous piano pieces.

Apart from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, the festival features the Royal Swedish Opera Orchestra, pianists Martin Sturfält and Stefan Lindgren, violinist Johan Dalene, conductors Patrik Ringborg, Andrew Manze and Tobias Ringborg, Dahlkvist Quartet, Stenhammar Quartet and Oslo String Quartet, as well as soprano Miah Persson and baritone Karl-Magnus Fredriksson along with  pianist Magnus Svensson.

Stenhammar was in fact one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in 1902. He was also the piano soloist at the very first concert with the new orchestra, on October 21st in 1902 (playing César Franck’s Symfonic Variations for piano and orchestra). Read more on the history of the orchestra.
